The journey begins

Fr. Michael O’Donoghue

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour”

Luke 4:18 – 19

Delivery begins and the scriptural quote from St Luke is chosen as the great context for the project we have envisaged.

The delivery team is poised and the excitement around the project is developing locally. There is real strength to the delivery the team. Passion with well thought out plans, drive and determination with a deep rootedness to ensuring that all people can come on the journey and a commitment to learning through action and reflection.

On Monday 7th March the project was launched to a cross section of residents from across Newark-on-Trent. Over 60 people came together and were introduced to the Root Solution – Listening Matters process that would be at the heart of this project.

People were listening to each other 1:1, there was a buzz of excitement in the room with many people never having the opportunity to be listened to before. Importantly as people moved from 1:1 to explore what mattered most to them in their groups actions were emerging. New projects were being explored, volunteers were coming forward and actions for change were being set.

People are showing real signs that they feel disengaged from the decision making processes. There voices are not being heard. Despite this, the listening conversation motivated action with 95% of the room committing to taking action after the meeting.

The journey so far is looking positive. We are sailing with the wind and we are looking forward to the challenges to come. We know that there will be parts of the journey that will involve tough navigation and that pressures may try to throw us off course but we will ride this. Let the pictures tell the story so far.
